A Touch Away — An Israeli Hit TV Series
Free screening of episodes 1 & 2

Two families whose lives fatefully intersect in an apartment complex in the Orthodox neighborhood of B’nei Barak in Tel Aviv. One is a strictly religious family whose daughter Rochele is about to enter into an arranged marriage with a wealthy young bridegroom. But sparks fly when a newly arrived, thoroughly secular family from Russia takes over a neighboring apartment.
The forbidden love between the two young neighbors threatens the families' cultural assumptions and beliefs. A Touch Away is a realistic reflection of the social challenges facing today's increasingly diverse Israeli society.

The show is spoken in a mix of Hebrew, Russian and Yiddish, and is subtitled in English. Henry David won the 2006 Israeli Television Academy “Best Actor” Award for the series.

Free DVD’s of episodes 1-7 will be available for private group viewings. The closing episode will be shown on Thursday March 25 at 7:00 p.m.

Cosponsored by Israel in DC. For more information, contact Barbara Winnik at bwinnik@jccgw.org or Gilad Golani at Gilad.Golani@shalomDC.org.

The Synagogue: Architecture, Art and Appeal
Photographs by Jono David

Reception – Sunday, March 14, 6-8 p.m. (free admission)
Where: JCC of Greater Washington
6125 Montrose Road, Rockville, MD 20852

A photographic celebration of synagogues of the world — featuring its architecture, art, and appeal -- including a special focus on the synagogues of India.

Architecture is the style in which a building has been constructed. Art is the expression of the architecture, including creative skill and visual beauty. Art is also seen in a neat stack of prayer books, an attractive row of pews, a finely embroidered parochet (an Ark tapestry), a pane of stained glass, or a tallit prayer shawl left casually behind in the sanctuary. Appeal is both the emotional power a synagogue evokes and those urgent requests we call tefilah, or prayer.

What distinguishes Israeli Society today and how do we envision it in the future?

Distinct Features of Israeli Society by Professor Sammy Smooha

This talk addresses fundamental questions about Israel as a society and a state: What are Israel's boundaries and population? Is Israel small? Is it unique? Is it Jewish? Is it Zionist? Is it deeply divided? Is it multicultural? Is it militaristic? Is it secular? Is it politically democratic? Is it a welfare state? Is it Western? Discussion of Israel's distinct features would complicate the stock answers to these questions, place Israel on the world map, and reveal the meaning of being Israeli.

** Professor Sammy Smooha, winner of the 2008 Israel Prize is the Dean of the faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Haifa. He is currently in Washington, DC as the Jennings Randolph Fellow at the U.S. Institute for Peace.

**Free and open to the public.

How you can help Haiti with Weizmann Technology

You may be familiar with the LifeStraw®, the portable solution to filtering water and making it potable developed by Weizmann graduate, Dr. Moshe Frommer. It is a timely solution to one of the great crises in the world and particularly in Haiti right now.

"LifeStraw® is a portable water purifier that effectively removes all bacteria and viruses responsible for causing common diarrheal diseases. LifeStraw® requires no electrical power or spare parts and can be carried around for easy access to safe and clean water." Each LifeStraw costs $6.50 and can filter 700 liters, the annual consumption of one adult.
To Donate money to purchase one or more Lifestraws for Haiti, use this link to Rotary International which is the exclusive philanthropic partner with the manufacturer to get Lifestraws to Haiti: http://lifestraw.123yourweb.com/
